Excursion to Orfordness:
the only freely accessible former atomic weapons test site in the world.
Members of the Institute were guided around the National Trust’s site at Orford Ness by
Wayne Cocroft from English Heritage. The site came into the Trust’s ownership in the early 1990s having been used for a range of military research programmes since World War One. The National Trust’s conservation policy of ‘benign neglect’ will allow many of these iconic buildings to decay and collapse into archaeological ruins over the next few years.
